ISSUE 01: GUNNERY (part one)
Exploring Naval Artillery: Cannons, Crew and Shot.
Artillery of this type (those present during the Golden Age of Piracy) are most often referred to in terms of their poundage. This referred to the weight of the solid iron round shot the cannon could fire. Typical weights are as follows: 42-pounders, 32-pounders, 24-pounders, 18-pounders, 12-pounders, 9-pounders, 8-pounders, and 6-pounders. Most cannons of the time were constrained to certain lengths and weights due to the necessity of accommodating the ships they were placed on. But that didn't stop the creation of Long Nines; longer barreled 9-pounders usually placed at the bow or stern of the ship. Their increased range and accuracy made them excellent chasers, generally limited to two at the rear or fore, they required additional room to prep and fire. The cannons seen mounted on the railing of ships are known as Culverins. Finally, one of the most recognizable cannons is the squat mortar.
